Sheldon FBLA Attends State Leadership Conference and Advances to Nationals

Members of the Sheldon Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) Chapter recently attended 2012 Missouri FBLA Leadership Conference held on April 21, 22, and 23 in Columbia, Missouri.

FBLA is a career and technical student organization made up of just over 14,000 members in 447 FBLA Chapters throughout the state. The state chapters met to elect state officers, transact business, participate in leadership and career workshops, and compete at the state level in objective and production tests.

Sheldon FBLA had five members attend state, those being Tristen Walker (Junior), Beth Spencer (Sophomore), Melissa Handle (Sophomore), Shaina Patrick (Sophomore), Zoey Bray (Freshman) and Sheldon FBLA Adviser Christy Lockard. Beth and Shaina represented the Sheldon FBLA as voting delegates. Tristan Walker qualified at districts by placing 2nd which made him eligible to compete at state in CyberSecurity. Tristen unfortunately did not place in the top 10 at state competition. Melissa Handle attended and represented Sheldon FBLA and the District 17 FBLA Reporter for the 2013-2014 year. Zoey Bray placed 1st at district competition in Word Processing I making her eligible for state competition. Zoey represented the Sheldon FBLA very well by placing 1st in the State of Missouri in the Word Processing category. By placing 1st at State this qualifies Zoey for competition at the National FBLA Leadership Conference to be held in Anaheim, California on June 27-30.

Several of the above students also competed in “Open Events” testing that is offered at the state level. Open Event Testing subjects that are tested are: Grammar, Html5, Social Media, and Leadership.

With Zoey Bray eligible to compete at National FBLA Leadership Conference, the Sheldon FBLA has devised a plan to raise money to help defray the cost of attending. This is the first time anyone at the Sheldon FBLA has qualified for state competition. The Sheldon FBLA was started in 1997 by the Sheldon Business Teacher Christy Lockard. She commented, “We have worked for many years to qualify for nationals and now we have a Sheldon FBLA member that has reached great success. Since this seems like a ‘once in a lifetime achievement’ we are working hard to raise money so four Sheldon students may take part in this great adventure.”

The plan is for Zoey Bray, Tristen Walker, Beth Spencer, and Melissa Handle to attend National FBLA Leadership Conference in June. They will be accompanied by Sheldon FBLA Adviser Christy Lockard and Zoey’s mother, Teresa Bray. Costs to attend seem very expensive but attainable. Checking into plane tickets and finding they cost approximately $425 dollars each, and then add the conference registration of $95 each, and the cost of a rental car of approximately $600 plus gas, you too can see that it is a very expensive trip. The cost for rooms while attending in Anaheim, California, has been alleviated by Sheldon FBLA Adviser Christy Lockard’s mother and step-father, Shirley and Elvin Bearce. The Bearce’s have condo time-share and have donated a 3 bedroom condo for the Sheldon FBLA members to stay in while in Anaheim. A big, big thank you goes to them for donating this and alleviating a $1,600 expense for which the Sheldon FBLA does not have to raise money.

While in Anaheim, California, Zoey will compete in Word Processing I, the other FBLA members attending will compete in “Open Events”, and all of them will enjoy great speakers in the leadership workshops plus see the local sights.

Sheldon FBLA is working to raise approximately $4000 to cover the plane tickets, rental vehicle, registration fees, and other miscellaneous costs that they will encounter while attending National FBLA Leadership Conference in Anaheim, California.

The first fund raiser planned is “Pizza Thursday” on Thursday, May 9. “Pizza Thursday” is sponsored by Chigger’s Convenience Store which is owned by Traci and Chadd Jones in Sheldon, Missouri. For every pizza (any kind) that is ordered, Chigger’s will donate $2 from each pizza sale to the Sheldon FBLA to help with National trip expenses. A big “thank you” goes to Tracy and Chadd for sponsoring “Pizza Thursday!”

The Sheldon FBLA is also planning a second fundraiser on Tuesday, May 21, 2013, at the Sheldon Cafeteria. That night at 7 p.m. is the Academic Awards Reception so starting at 4 p.m. we will hold a Baked Potato Bar and Grilled Hotdogs Event. All proceeds made will go directly to help defray costs of attending National FBLA. More we are planning to have baked potatoes with many toppings of your choice and then have the grilled hotdogs for the children if they want them. We will have more details on this as time gets closer.

For the third fund raiser, the Sheldon FBLA received some donated items and is looking for other items to be donated for a “Ticket Event” (raffle.) Tickets will be $1 each and the list of donated items will be announced in the next week or so.

If you would like to donate items for the “Ticket Event” (raffle), or potatoes or toppings for the potatoes, or money to help with our trip expenses please contact the Sheldon Business Teacher Christy Lockard (660-200-6629), Sheldon FACS Teacher Deb Metcalf, or the Sheldon High School Secretary Vicki Jadlot at the school (417-884-5111) for information on how to do this. All donations are greatly appreciated and needed!
